Adenia Perrieri Information

botanicwonders

Native to Madagascar, this caudiciform plant with a caudex grows into a stem that forms vine-like, green annual branches carrying lace-like foliage. The stem can grow up to 10 feet long, and the caudex can expand up to 8 inches in diameter.

The deep green leaves with light green to white patterns of the bottle tree are deeply separated. Adenia Perrieri offers small green-white blooms during summer.

How to propagate Adenia Perrieri

Usually, cuttings do not form a caudex; it will be better to grow Adenia from seeds. Bottle trees are male or female; both are needed for seed production. Pre-soak the seeds for 12 hours and sow them in a pot or tray filled with a substrate of perlite, peat, and sand. The required temperature for germination is 70-75 F. Cover the pot with a plastic bag; the seeds will germinate in 2-3 weeks. Once seedlings appear, move them to individual pots.

Light

Keep the plant where leaves get bright indirect light, but keep the caudex in the shade. You will notice abundant growth in the warm season when plants produce lush foliage.

Soil

Use fast-draining soil for growing bottle trees. You can purchase a soil-free commercial potting mix. A permeable substrate is ideal; just blend it with perlite or sand.

Water

Water the plant when the topsoil becomes dry between waterings. Avoid overwatering the plant, as it can lead to root rot.

Temperature

Make sure the plant survives in cold months by protecting it from frost. The plant becomes dormant in this period, so reduce watering. Try to keep the temperature above 50 F.
