Plants not only make a room feel lived-in, but unlike books, they bring a sense of warmth and hospitality while adding a touch of life to the space. If you’re looking to find beautiful houseplants without spending money, there are several strategies to consider. One is choosing low-cost houseplants. Another is seeking out second-hand plants at discounted rates. Finally, you can create your own houseplants from cuttings. Each of these methods can help you build a plant-filled space without breaking the bank.

Purchasing Low-Cost Houseplants

Certain plants are recognized for being costly, and this category includes many of the “trendy” ones, like fiddle-leaf figs with their broad leaves, calathea rattlesnake with its unique reptilian patterns, and the exotic white bird of paradise. The current botanical “it” plants generally have higher price tags. It is not surprising as they require more care and attention.

On the other hand, there are the more familiar houseplant favorites, which are just as beautiful, much easier to care for, and often come at a surprisingly low cost. These include air-purifying and low-light-friendly plants like golden pothos (Epipremnum aureum), snake plants (Sansevieria trifasciata), peace lilies (Spathiphyllum), and spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum). Succulents are also generally affordable and have low demands.

Free Indoor Plants

While you might get free indoor plants from friends or neighbors. It is even more likely that they’ll give you free houseplant cuttings. This form of propagation is quite successful if you choose the right plants.

Simply ask your neighbor for a healthy 3 to 5-inch (7.6 to 12.7 cm) cutting from a foliage plant like a pothos or philodendron, with four to six leaves still on it. Remove the lower leaves and insert the cut end into moist potting soil. Keep the soil consistently damp until you see roots growing.

Plants like snake plants and the popular ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) can be propagated through division or by rooting leaf cuttings. Spider plants are particularly easy to propagate because they produce baby spiderettes on long, thin stems, which can be cut off and replanted.

Discounted Houseplants

If you’re looking for an even cheaper option, you’ll need to put in a bit more effort. Yard sales and moving sales often have plants for sale, and you might even find houseplants from neighbors who can’t take them on a cross-country move. Neighborhood social apps like NextDoor are also great places to look. These plants are usually priced much lower than those in garden stores, as their owners are eager to find them a good home.

For another kind of budget-friendly houseplant, consider bulbs. Amaryllis bulbs are an excellent choice. You can get these bulbs for a low price at garden stores, pot them yourself, and then enjoy watching the tall stalks grow and burst into large, bright, starry, lily-like blooms. The transformation from bulb to flower takes just a few weeks.
