Botanical Name: Strelitzia reginae

Height: 40-48 inches

The plant produces long, leathery foliage similar to the leaves of the banana tree. The stiff leaves grow from a ground-level base, and the flowers with blue petals and orange sepals rest on rigid stalks. The blooms resemble the head of an exotic bird.

Some best cultivars are:

Orange Bird of Paradise: Strelitzia reginae shows off beautiful colored blooms on 3-foot-tall stalks during winter, spring, and summer. It can grow up to 3-5 feet tall.

Glauca: It can grow up to 18-20 inches tall and display glaucous leaves and stems.

‘Mandela’s Gold’ Bird of Paradise: Strelitzia reginae ‘Mandela’s Gold’ offers yellow blooms; it’s a yellow flowering variety of the common orange flowering bird of paradise.

Humilis: This dwarf variety showcases oblong leaves and dense clumps. It reaches up to 18-20 inches tall.
