Do Hot Peppers Deter Pests 1

Today, many people are increasingly worried about the use of synthetic pesticides on food crops and are turning to natural alternatives. Responding to these concerns, researchers have been investigating various natural solutions. Among these, studies have shown that hot peppers can be effective in controlling pests, particularly the larvae of the cabbage looper and spider mites.

Researchers have found that various types of hot peppers are effective in pest control. Most hot peppers used in the study successfully killed cabbage looper larvae, but only cayenne pepper had any significant effect on spider mites. Previous research has also shown that hot pepper-based repellents can deter onion flies from laying eggs, reduce the growth of the spiny bollworm, and repel cotton pests. Therefore, hot peppers can indeed repel some pests, though not all. For home gardeners seeking natural pest repellents, hot peppers offer a viable option. While commercially available natural repellents often contain hot peppers, you can also make your own.
