How to Grow Celery at Home in Water
Material You’ll Require:
- Glass pot
- A clean, sharp knife
- Fresh celery
- Freshwater
Directions:
1. Cut the Ends of a Celery Stalk
Use a sharp knife and cut the base of the celery stalk up to 2 inches from the bottom. You can eat the stalks as only a celery base is needed for the propagation.
NOTE: Remember to use a fresh celery base for growing it in water. Do not use stored celery for propagation.
2. Plant the Celery Base in Water
Fill a shallow glass bowl with clean, non-chlorinated, room-temperature water up to an inch or two level. Now, place the celery base in it. That’s it; the propagation process is done!
3. Ideal Location
Place the celery plant in an area with bright indirect light. Do not expose it to direct sunlight.
4. Monitor the Growth
Keep an eye on the growth and change the water every couple of days. You will notice the sprouts will emerge in a few days, and in just a week, small leaves and stalks with little roots will develop on the base.
5. Feed It
Add a pinch of balanced liquid fertilizer to the water you are growing celery. Organic worm-casting tea or aquarium water are also great options for providing nutrients to your celery plant.
6. Transplant to Soil (Optional)
In case you want a big plant, you can transplant water-grown celery plants into the soil. For this, fill a small container with well-draining soil. Place the coffee filter on drainage holes; it will prevent soil from coming out. Plant the germinated celery base on the moist soil in a pot and surround the celery base with more soil. Keep the pot in an area with partial or filtered light in the initial phase and maintain the moisture of the soil. You can place the plant in full to partial sun when it is mature enough.
