Philodendron Brandi Care and Growing Guide

Philodendron Brandi is a beautiful tropical plant that looks great in hanging baskets and climbs up a trellis, too.

Native to Philodendron Brandi (Philodendron brandtianum), it belongs to the Araceae family. This climbing vine produces heart-shaped olive green foliage with heavy white to silver markings that give it another common name, silver leaf philodendron.

In the tropical habitat, it climbs but can be grown as a houseplant in hanging baskets or pots. It grows fast and can attain a height of 4-5 feet indoors and 15 feet outdoors.

USDA Zones: 9b-11

Common Names: Philodendron brandi, Silver leaf philodendron

Propagating Philodendron Brandi

Philodendron Brandi can be grown from stem cuttings. Start propagating the plant in the spring and summer months. Use clean pruning shears and cut 3-6 inches of healthy stems with a few sets of leaves. Make a cut below the node, and discard the leaves from the lower part of the cuttings.

To grow the plant in water, fill a glass jar with water. Insert the stem in it, making sure the nodes are submerged. Change the water twice a week or when it turns murky.

When planting this philodendron in soil, fill a pot with potting mix. Dip the cut ends in rooting hormone, though it’s optional. Plant the stems in the soil, burying the node in it. Keep the soil moist, but do not overwater.

Keep the cuttings where it gets bright indirect light in warm temperatures.

The roots will grow in 3-4 weeks at that time you can move the cuttings to pot with well-draining soil.

Ideal Growing Conditions for Philodendron Brandi

Light

It grows best in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can harm the plant, so avoid placing it in an area with harsh direct light.

Soil

Use well-draining soil. If using a standard potting mix, blend it with coir or perlite in a 3:1 ratio. You can also use nutrient-rich soil or add compost for faster, healthier growth. The pH has to be between neutral and slightly acidic.

Water

Philodendron Brandi must be watered thoroughly and consistently according to the environment. Water the plant when the top inches of the soil are dry. If you notice drooping or curly leaves, it’s a sign that plants require more moisture. Do not spray water on the leaves.

Temperature and Humidity

This plant enjoys warm, humid surroundings with a temperature range between 65 to 95 F. It can handle temperatures up to 50 F for short time.

It enjoys humidity levels between 50 and 60 percent. If you lack the required humidity, use a pebble tray filled with water. Make sure the bottom of the pot does not come in contact with water.

Philodendron Brandi Care

Fertilizer

It does not necessarily need fertilization. To promote healthy growth, apply a balanced fertilizer for indoor plants in spring and summer. Avoid feeding the plant in fall and winter.

Repotting

Philodendron Brandi requires occasional repotting. To know when to repot the plant, examine if roots are coming out from the drainage holes. Carefully loose the soil from the sides of the container and root ball. Take a new pot 2 inches bigger than the current one and fill it with rich, loose, well-draining potting mix. Plant it at the same depth and gently water it.

Pests and Diseases

Spider mites and mealy bugs can pose an issue. Use a neem oil or insecticidal soap to control spider mites. For a severe infestation, take the help of commercial insecticides.

Mealybugs can cause your plant to wilt, try the same above mentioned remedies for repelling them.
